Breaking Down Misconceptions About AI

This article is part of the Working With AI series on MediaCrush

When I talk to my peers about AI, I hear the same things: “Isn’t it dangerous? Too complicated? Won’t it replace us?”

The truth is, these fears are common—but often unfounded.

Here’s what AI actually does in my world:

  • It helps me write in my own voice.
  • Provides structure when I’m feeling unorganized or scattered.
  • Suggests new ways to approach old problems.
  • Makes many time-consuming tasks simple!

Here’s what it doesn’t do:

  • Replace human heart, humor, or creativity.

  • Take away the joy of the process.

  • Make me less valuable—it makes me more efficient.

The misconception is that AI is “cold.” The reality is, when used well, it helps bring more warmth and humanity to your work, because you spend less time on the grind and more time on the connection.

FAQ

Is AI just for coders and tech pros?

No. It’s become a general tool for planning, writing, research summaries, and creative brainstorming.

Does using AI make my work less authentic?

Your perspective, stories, and choices make it authentic. AI is scaffolding—you’re the architect.

Isn’t it faster to do it myself?

For tiny tasks, maybe. For repeatable or longer tasks, AI drastically reduces time-to-first-draft.

How can older adults benefit specifically?

Speeding routine tasks, documenting family stories, learning new skills, and launching long-delayed projects.

What about “hallucinations”?

They happen—so verify important facts, use trusted sources, and keep claims modest and cited.
